                                               2009 - 10 FMS Season

The B-team season started out with great success as 24 seventh graders and 20
eighth graders registered to wrestle. These wrestlers, along with eleven 6th
graders, gave an indication of the great possibilities for the season and for the
future ones to come. This was the largest number to ever register to wrestle for the
black and red of Forest Middle School.
At midseason 51 middle school wrestlers were still in the Forest Wrestling
program. This was by far the largest number of wrestlers and almost double what
we had in the past mid point of the year. The dual record was 5-1 heading into the
regional competition at Dunbar Middle School, which was to be a dual team format.
The only loss on the season came to our greatest rival fir the region and district
titles...Linkhorne Middle School.  The loss was not close and they hammered the
B-team by double digits. Great improvement in the practice room had to be
achieved if the FMS wrestlers to challenge for the post season tournaments.
Eight wrestlers participated in a scrimmage with the Brookville Bees Club as a
preliminary to the JV and varsity match.  With several FMS athletes bumping up in
weight to match up with the few Bee's wrestlers, the Brookvillians to full advantage
of that advantage, winning 5 of 8 matches.
Six wrestlers elected to travel to the VAC middle school championshipsin the
Hampton roads area of the commonwealth. Highlighting the FMS presence was the
standout performances of Bret Romanzak's 3rd place finish and DJ McDaniel's 5th
place tally.
We wrestled in 5 CVYWO open tournaments, one being cancelled due to a small
amount of snow;). These tournaments gave our wrestlers invaluable experience
with many garnering great success by not only getting their first ever wins but also
their first career tournament titles. First year wrestlers who won their tournaments
of their careers were Ben May (multiple), John Kese, Cary Quildran, Gil "Tex"
Wright, Nick Gehman, and Devyn Geyer.
One of the FMS goals is to win the CVYWO district title because the black and red
has won nit 2 of the last 3 seasons. A second goal is to win the Bedford County
championship...which was achieved with crushing wins over Staunton River (61-36)
and Liberty (90-12). Jeff Reed proved a never say die attitude when he defeated a
Staunton River opponent who had beaten him 4 times previously. Versus Liberty
Peyton Woodall did not want to get his hair messed up dispatching his Minuteman
opponent in a mere 14 seconds.
Due to the unusual amount of snow days, the B-team season ended and we had to
compete in the post season as a club.  The regional tournament at Dunbar was the
first held in which 4 teams showed up to compete.  the title would be decided in
the first match the knights of FMS in a matchup with perennial power Linkhorne.
The FMS wrestlers held a lead late in the action on the strength of pins by Peyton
Woodall and Jason Ayers and an upset win by Zack Cavanaugh. It looked like
Devyn Geyer was going to seal the deal when he put his opponent to his back in
the 1st period but could not seal the deal. Unfortunately in the 2nd period the roles
would be reversed and Linkhorne would get the decisive points with a fall.
Recovering from that disappointment  the B-team boys put away Dunbar and
Sandusky with relative ease, more than doubling the score in each case.
Individually FMS had six athletes take 1st place and another 4 to runner-up honors.
Despite the loss to Linkhorne, an improved result from earlier in the season shows
the FMS program is heading in the right direction.
CVYWO Districts was hosted by Forest and again the team standing in the way of a
repeat title would be Linkhorne. The FMS B-team boys came into the competion
with a strong 28 member contingent, which was not as many as hoped for but still
the largest number of the teams competing. The B-team Boys made it close by
putting 8 in the finals but fell four points short, the equivalent of two wins or one
pin. FMS went 4-4 in the finals but nabbed another 5 3rd place finishes.
Many were left thinking that we had let one slip away...if only a couple more
wrestlers had attended or if better coaching decisions were made...if if and buts
were candy and nuts we would all have a wonderful Christmas.  Opponents were
happy to see the mighty FMS team fall, winning 2 in a row and 3 out of 4 would put
the B-team boys in the evil empire category in the arena of CVYWO.
The 09-10 season ended with thoughts of what if but in retrospect one has to say it
was one of success. We started with over 50 wrestlers and finished with over 30
even after contending with weather cancellations and postponements of practices
and tournaments, winning the 2nd consecutive BCC while finishing 2nd in the
Region and the CVYWO to a strong Linkhorne team.  Coach Burgess and the
B-team boys have set the bar high and this year was no different. The 2nd palce
result was disappointing but the numbers are encouraging. With the expected
return of this year's 7th graders and an unknown influx of "new" sixth graders from
the Forest community the red and black of Forest will contend again nest season!
